Cleaning-Maintenance of Vinyl Siding

ov50_hero3

Vinyl siding is one of the top choices of homeowners today due to it having properties of wood siding, minus all of the maintenance that comes along with it. Installing vinyl siding means you do not have to worry about repainting your home’s exterior every five years, which saves you money and valuable time.

How Should Vinyl Siding Be Washed?

Vinyl siding should be washed with a soft cloth or a long-handled soft bristle brush. Start from the bottom of the house to the top and rinse with water to give your siding the best look. Siding with textured surfaces should be cleaned with a gentle, soft bristle brush to thoroughly clean inside the grooves of the rough texture.

Mold and Mildew Removal

Mildew and mold spots that are small can be used with Windex or Fantastik. Larger mildew and mold spots can be used with 30% vinegar and 70% water mixed together. Another way to clean large spots is to use ⅓ cup of laundry detergent with ⅔ cup of powdered household cleaner (i.e. Spic & Span), 1 quart of liquid laundry bleach, and 1 gallon of water.

How Can I Protect Vinyl Siding From Becoming Discolored?

Vinyl siding should be covered when stains, wet concrete and sealants are being used, or other household projects. Chemicals such as herbicides and insecticides can damage siding, so be sure to read product labels or call the product manufacturer before applying any chemicals.

What Type of Vinyl Siding Should I Install?

Today there are many types of vinyl siding that vary in color, shape, size and texture. Any vinyl siding product that you purchase should have standards tested by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM).
